Behind every meaningful place is a vision—and behind Windwood Equestrian is William D. Upton III, an entrepreneur, developer, investor, and horseman whose career has spanned equestrian sport, hospitality, and multifamily real estate.

For William, Windwood has never simply been a business venture. It has been the culmination of a lifelong passion for horses, land stewardship, hospitality, and creating places where people can gather, celebrate, and build lasting memories.

Located in Pelham, Alabama, Windwood Equestrian reflects the vision of building something timeless—something rooted in tradition, beauty, and purpose.

Building Windwood Equestrian

Windwood Equestrian began as a premier sport horse training and breeding facility and has grown into one of the Southeast’s most distinctive luxury event venues.

Under William’s leadership, the 200+ acre estate has been thoughtfully developed to combine world-class equestrian facilities with timeless architecture, pastoral beauty, and elevated hospitality.

Today, Windwood is recognized as both a high-level riding center and an award-winning wedding and event venue, hosting couples and celebrations from across Alabama and beyond.

What began with a love of horses and land has evolved into a destination known for its unique blend of Southern charm, English countryside inspiration, and deeply personal hospitality.

A Foundation in Equestrian Sport

William’s background in the international horse industry began early, building relationships across Europe and importing top sport horses while developing his own breeding and training program.

That global experience shaped the vision for Windwood—bringing together the best elements of European equestrian tradition with Southern hospitality and land conservation.

His dedication to horse sport remains one of the foundational pillars of Windwood today, where horses are not simply part of the backdrop but part of the property’s living history and daily rhythm.

Expanding into Hospitality and Real Estate

As Windwood evolved, so did William’s entrepreneurial pursuits.

Recognizing opportunities beyond equestrian sport, he expanded into hospitality and multifamily real estate investment, applying the same principles of long-term value, disciplined operations, and thoughtful development.

He has successfully acquired, operated, and exited investment properties and currently serves as General Partner across multiple multifamily housing investments throughout the Southeast.

His work reflects a diversified portfolio built on strategy, vision, and long-term growth—always with an eye toward creating lasting value.

A Legacy of Building

At the center of everything William builds is a commitment to quality, longevity, and integrity.

Whether developing Windwood Equestrian into a nationally recognized venue, investing in multifamily communities, or stewarding land and horses, his focus has remained the same: creating enduring value for future generations.

Windwood stands as a reflection of that philosophy—a place built not only for today, but for decades to come.

Life Beyond Business

While William’s professional life spans equestrian sport, hospitality, and real estate, the heart of his life is found at home with his family at Windwood.

Outside of work, William has a deep appreciation for travel and is always drawn to places rich in culture, history, and exceptional food. He especially enjoys discovering farm-to-table dining experiences, where the connection between land, season, and table mirrors much of what he values at home.

That same appreciation for the land extends to Windwood itself. He has spent years cultivating and growing the property’s fruit orchard, with this summer’s focus centered on expanding and harvesting its blackberry crop—a project that reflects both patience and the simple reward of working the land.

But above all, William’s greatest joy is being a father. Much of his time away from business is spent with his son, Wills, riding bikes around the property, one-wheeling through the farm roads, cooking together, spending time with close friends, and enjoying the everyday life they have built at Windwood.

And, of course, horses remain at the center of it all. William continues to ride regularly, with his current focus on three of his horses—Nacho, Orrin, and Sara—each representing the enduring connection to the equestrian life that first inspired Windwood’s beginnings.

Looking Ahead

With continued growth in both hospitality and real estate, William D. Upton III remains focused on expanding the Windwood experience while growing his investment footprint across the Southeast.

His story is one of entrepreneurship rooted in tradition, shaped by vision, and driven by the belief that meaningful things are built over time.

At Windwood, that philosophy can be seen in every pasture, every barn, every celebration, and every quiet moment shared on the land he has spent his life building.
